TOAD ON TOUR

A book of comic verse I spotted in Waterstone’s in Hull on a recent visit. Pofits from its sale go to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. The author purchased "Poem Toad" seen here on the cover of his book, at the public auction where the glass fibre toads from Hull’s 2010 "Larkin 25 Project" were sold off. He then drove it round the region setting up photo-shoots with local celebrities, so providing a vehicle for his verse, here’s a sample: -

"Of all the soft drinks that there is,
Give me one that’s got some fizz,
Still ones are far too overrated
Give me one that’s carbonated.

I love the ones I do suppose
That sends the bubbles up your nose
A liquid caffeinated trip
When you take that first exciting sip,

There’s some in bottles, cans with rings
There’s even one that gives you wings
So many cans its just a maze
I’m drowning in a soft-drink haze!

And some days…the bear gets you. This is a tough, tough shooting environment. On top of everything else, many of the costumes were black. They want to just sink into the background.

So, yes, yow: look at all of that digital noise on her legs. But what can you do? Her face is well-lit, the shot’s in focus: we can call this a Photo.

I was shooting RAW files, with the pro-quality (but old) Nikon D200. One of the signature features of a pro camera is the ability to customize its features. The D200 has a programmable function button at the base of the lens, for example. You can press it with your ring finger without taking the camera away from your face.

I programmed the button to suppress the flash when I held it down. This made it easy to hedge my bets: within the space of a few seconds, I could take one shot with flash and then one shot without.

After looking at dozens of these pairs of photos, it appears that "hold your nose and just use a flash" was the best call. The sharp no-flash shots are prettier, but only about half of them were sharp in the first place.

On this subject herself: oh, man. It takes some special kind of determination to wear a full latex bodysuit on a hot day. Once again, my hat’s off to people who are this committed to the hobby.

i was bored and wanted to do this so i did.

Clean a nose piercing by washing hands, applying an antibacterial solution to a Q-tip, rubbing the inside and outside parts of the nose and rinsing with warm water. Soak nose piercing in an Epsom salt bath for 15 minutes to thoroughly clean the piercing using tips in this free video from an experienced piercer on body modifications. Due to sinus issues and other problems I never have gotten my nose pierced (despite always wanting it pierced). For my Steampunk outfit I was researching components for fake nose and earrings. When that didn’t turn out to my liking I decided to create my own fake nose rings using copper wire and/or jump rings. Here are the results.

Clay Mask

This face sat alone, without description. One would this this to be a major attraction with its brilliant colors and ring of red and white around the top of the skull. Possibly this was found too early for anyone to remember from where it came. The blue mosaiced pieces are probably made from a clay called palygorskite. The eyes are probably made from shell. That might be copper lining the top of the skull.

Calima

Closer to the Pacific Coast is Valle de Cauca where the Colima lived. This piece is a tumbaga (gold/copper alloy) warrior head. I suppose it could have been used as a headdress.

new nose ring! this is the first time i’ve put in a different nose ring everrrrrrrrrrrr. it is purple, with a star.

probably i will take it out and put my old nose ring back in soon, because this one is actually kind of uncomfortable — the corkscrew doesn’t fit my nose the way the corkscrew on my old nose ring does. sigh, life is hard.

OLYMPUS E-420 WITH NINA

Nina loves her, newly acquired, Olympus E-420. The only adverse comment she made referred to it having a touch of shutter lag. This was taken outside the Register Office in Taunton while we were waiting for the groom to arrive.

Getting my nose pierced for my 18th birthday. Done by Kate at Masterpiece Tattoos on Staten Island, NYC. And for everyone who keeps asking: no, it barely hurt. It hurt more the following days after in the healing process. I also don’t know why it bled so much. I’ve been getting mixed reasons, so I’m just leaving it as “it bled, oh well”.
